Harrow Police Numbers Falling Yet Again

Harrow Police Numbers Falling Yet Again

Mayor breaks election promise as over 3,000 police officers lost across London

New figures show that the number of police officers in Harrow has fallen again. Harrow now has 343 police officers and 38 community police officers – a total of just 381, but in March 2010 Harrow had 403 police officers and 116 PCSOs - a total of 519.

In June 2013 there were 362 police officers and 62 PCSOs in Harrow, so in total 43 officers have been cut from Harrow’s force in just 6 months.

The figures also reveal that the Metropolitan Police has lost over 3,000 officers across London since May 2010. There are now 30,085 Police Officers in London – a drop of 10%, despite the Mayor promising that he would maintain police numbers ‘at or around 32,000’.
Deputy Mayor for Policing Stephen Greenhalgh said last year that it would be a “doomsday scenario” for policing if the figure dipped below 31,000.

Over the same period the Met has also lost 2,265 Police Community Support Officers – 50% of the total.

According to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) the Met Police is now the third least visible on the streets compared to other areas of the country.

Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West, said:

“It’s vitally important that Harrow police have the resources they need to tackle crime in the borough so this further drop in the number of officers in Harrow is particularly worrying.

At election time Boris Johnson and David Cameron promised to maintain police numbers at 32,000, but according to the Mayor’s own figures he has cut police officer numbers by over 3,000 and axed half of London’s local community police officers.”
